Day 33 - 36: Maramures & Bucovina

In order to get up to Maramures, we had to take an overnight train.

We boarded our 6 berth 2nd class sleeper train (as 1st class was all sold out!) for a 12 hour journey north to Sighetu Marmatiei in Maramures, although we were only travelling 488km. Not surprisingly, the train crept along at a snail's pace at times - although it was very comfortable, very safe and very clean! We arrived a little late (which is the norm for Romanian trains) and we were met by our guide at the station.

My favourite site on our first day in Maramures must be the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta - where ones life story would be hand painted onto a wooden cross!

A visit to Maramures would also not be complete without a visit to the wooden churches of Barsana, Ieud (oldest wooden church in the area) and Botiza.

As well as a locomotive ride through the Vaser Valley.

We had the best meal of our Romanian holiday at our home stay in Botiza. A four course meal where the vegetables were fresh from the garden and there this amazing roasted aubergine spread which I have to try making once I get home!

It took us 5 hours through Prislop pass to make it over to Suceava, Buconvina in order to see the painted monasteries.
